The Adolescence Education Grades 7-12 (Initial Certification) program is in the Curriculum and Instruction Department, which is one of six departments in the School of Education. Visit the program admissions page to apply.

 

Program Description

This residency program is a cohort model that combines coursework and supervised field placements. The Adolescence program consists of 38 credits. The program prepares teachers to the level of excellence specified in the SUNY Oswego School of Education Conceptual Framework and the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) guidelines.  Nearly all courses are taught at the SUNY Oswego in Syracuse campus.

Additional Program Requirements

  • Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SSHS) Training  
  • School of Education Professional Dispositions
  • Student Teaching: Each candidate will be provided two student teaching placements. Each placement is 15 weeks in length and involves a full-time commitment, all day Monday – Friday. Candidates earn either a Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory grade for each of the two student teaching experiences. If an unsatisfactory grade is earned, the candidate may have another placement. If two unsatisfactory grades are earned, the candidate will not be placed a third time. Requirements of Student Teaching/residency: 
    • Completion of SSHS 1020—Safe Schools, Healthy Students (or equivalent) and DASA 1020—DASA Training.
    • Completed Student Teaching Application 

MST Adolescence Residency Track

The curriculum of the Residency Track Option is the same as the curriculum of the regular MST Adolescence Education program listed above.

Students can apply for the Residency Track option if they agree to teach in our partner district for at least two years after completion of this MST program.

In return for this commitment to teach for two years Residency track students are eligible for the following:

  • A Residency stipend from the partner district
  • Tuition reduction from SUNY
  • A Residency Certificate from the New York State Education Department (NYSED)

 

To choose this MST Residency Track option, accepted MST Adolescence students must apply for and be selected by our partner district to complete a Residency.
