HIS 378 - Freedom in American History 3 Credits
Using the disciplines of law and history, this course examines how
Americans have defined the word “freedom” from the colonial era
through the twentieth century. Political, economic, and social
contexts will be explored, with particular attention paid to the
relationship between individual liberties and the power of the
state to influence behavior. Prerequisite: completion of all Basic Skills requirements and
Knowledge Foundation courses or permission of the instructor. 1.)
advanced class standing and a previous course in the area; or a
general level of competence indicated by three previous courses in
the social sciences and/or humanities 2.) seminars and colloquia
require the permission of the instructor. When Offered: Fall, Spring
