The Curriculum and Instruction (Professional Certification) program is in the Curriculum and Instruction Department, which is one of six departments in the College of Education, Health & Human Services. Visit the program admissions page to apply.

I. Generalist Track (30 cr)

Candidates whose initial certification is Childhood (1-6), Early Childhood (B-2), Middle Childhood Generalist (5-9), or Special Education will complete this Generalist Track of Content Related Electives.

A. Pedagogical Core (15 cr)

Select one course from the following two:
- EDU 500 Critical Pedagogy Credit: 3
- LIT 500 Critical Literacy and Pedagogy Credit: 3

EDU 510 - Educational Assessment Credit: 3
EDU 516 - Continuing Professional Development through Research Credit: 3
EDU 555 - Curriculum Development Credit: 3
EDU 595 - Portfolio Development and Professional Synthesis Credit: 3
EDU 595 is to be taken after completion of 18 credits.

B. Pedagogical Electives (3 cr)

Select one approved elective.

C. Generalist Track Content Related Core (12 cr)

EDU 506 - Use of Technology for Professional Development Credit: 3
Select, with advisor approval, three content-related courses that link pedagogy and content in the subject of the certificate or a related subject.

II. Specialist Track (30 cr)

Candidates whose initial certification is Adolescence (7-12), Middle Childhood Specialist (5-9), Special Education (7-12), Art (All Grades), or Music (All Grades) will complete this Specialist Track of Content Related Electives.

A. Pedagogical Core (15 cr)

Select one course from the following two:
- EDU 500 Critical Pedagogy Credit: 3
- LIT 500 Critical Literacy and Pedagogy Credit: 3

EDU 510 - Educational Assessment Credit: 3
EDU 516 - Continuing Professional Development through Research Credit: 3
EDU 555 - Curriculum Development Credit: 3
