Admission

The following materials must be submitted online to the Graduate Studies Office, www.oswego.edu/gradstudies. Applicants will be notified of the review committee’s decision within six weeks from the date the application is complete.

  1. Program Advisement Form completed at a Program Advisement meeting. Schedule a meeting at www.oswego.edu/gradstudies and click on Program Advisement Meeting under “View Admission Requirement” or email cigrad@oswego.edu
  2. Transcript review prior to admissions will assess progress/completion of 6 credits in EACH of the following: English Language Arts, mathematics, science, social studies. This requirement must be met before candidate can begin Internship.
  3. Graduate Application, including Education Essay and Purpose Statement
  4. An official transcript for all undergraduate (cumulative 3.0 GPA is required) and graduate work. Applicants with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0 are welcome to apply, but you should explain in your Purpose Statement what skills /experiences you will bring to the program or any special circumstances that affected your GPA.
  5. Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required for admission as mandated by New York State. Applicants may be conditionally admitted without scores, but test results must be submitted no later than ten days prior to the beginning of the semester  
  6. Submit a copy of a NYS initial teaching certificate in Adolescence 7-12, or in TESOL education no later than ten days prior to beginning your program
  7. Two letters of recommendation: one from a college Professor (preferably a methods instructor) and a second from the student teaching experience who can speak to your teaching ability
  8. Resume

 

 

Prerequisites: Students must hold valid NYS teaching certificate in one of the following: English Education 7-12, Mathematics Education 7-12, Science Education 7-12, Social Studies Education 7-12, Modern Language 7-12 or TESOL from accredited IHE; 3.0 GPA required for D.C.

To be completed prior to admission:

  • Literacy in Content Areas or equivalent (3 cr)
  • Adolescent Development (3 cr)

To be completed prior to internship:

  • 6 credits of college coursework in each of the following: English Language Arts, mathematics, social studies and science (24 cr).
