Culture Studies Track (37-49 cr)
A. Core Requirements (19 cr)
B. Elective Requirements
- Select language, culture or literature courses at the 300- or 400-level in German. Students may take three to nine credit hours of courses outside their major, however, with the conditions that they devise a learning agreement, and that in GER 499 they synthesize and present for public information the inter-relationships of approved courses taken in- and outside of their major. The learning agreement is to be approved by the undergraduate advisor for the major and by the MLL Department Chair, ideally by the end of the student’s sophomore year. In most cases, approved courses will come from the fields of anthropology, art, history, music, philosophy, political science or business.
C. Cognate Requirements (0-12 cr)
- Twelve credit hours in a second foreign language through FRE 202. Students who are double majors are exempt from the cognate requirements. Furthermore, students who spend an academic year abroad need only take six credit hours of another foreign language.
Notes:
All ML majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for at least one semester or summer.
The Modern Language courses collectively are denoted by ML. For example, ML 101 in French is FRE 101 • Elementary French.
Students may earn up to twelve credit hours equivalent for ML 101 through 202 courses via the CLEP Examination. Contact the department for further details about policies concerning proficiency credit.
A grade of C- or better is required in the following modern language courses when applied to the major or when used to fulfill the departmental second modern language cognate requirement: 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, 350, 351, (352, 353 in Spanish). This requirement would be waived in the event a student made the decision to major or declare a cognate after having received a grade below C- in one of the above courses in the applicable language(s), but also a C- or better in the subsequent course(s). |
