In 1861, Edward Austin Sheldon founded the Oswego Primary Teachers’ Training School, which would become SUNY Oswego. Today, the College of Education, Health and Human Services carries on Sheldon’s efforts related to authentic learning and social justice by emphasizing knowledge, practice, reflection, collaboration, and leadership in all our programs.
Bachelor of Science (and graduate degree/certificate) programs can be viewed on the College of Education, Health and Human Services website.
The teacher preparation and professional school personnel programs at the State University of New York at Oswego are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), a national accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. This accreditation status is effective through Spring 2029. A complete list of programs included in this review is available on the College of Education, Health and Human Services Accreditation page.
New York State Teacher Certification program areas offered:
Adolescence Education, Career and Technical Educator Preparation (all majors), Career and Technical Education for Practicing Teachers Certificate, Childhood Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and Technology Education programs are registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and lead to eligibility for certification.
In accordance with the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), the New York State Education Department requires that all candidates for initial and professional certification complete six hours of training in harassment, bullying, and discrimination intervention in compliance with the Dignity for All Students Act and Parts 52 and 80 of the Commissioner’s Regulations. This requirement includes those who already hold an initial certificate and are applying for any new professional certificate.
A candidate who completes all the degree requirements of one of these programs fulfills the academic requirements for the appropriate certification in New York State. However, NYSED has additional requirements for all certifications, including appropriate scores on New York State Teacher Certification Exam(s), U.S. citizenship or visa eligibility to work in the U.S., good moral character (confirmed by a criminal background check), and timely application. Information on certification is available from the New York State Education Department.
Clinical and Field Experience Policies
Complete descriptions of program field experience policies can be accessed in each department. Undergraduate candidates are required to use the data management system approved by the School of Education. Undergraduate candidates will be informed when to access and utilize the system.
Teacher education clinical experiences are arranged by the Clinical Practice and Partnerships Office within the appropriate program’s service region. Candidates are expected to have reliable transportation to and from clinical experiences but should notify the Clinical Practice and Partnerships Office if they have transportation needs. Travel times to sites are generally within 60 minutes for clinical experiences that occur before student teaching but could be up to 90 minutes for student teaching.
