The chemistry programs are designed to meet a variety of needs. The BA program will meet the needs of those students desiring to enter a professional school, such as medical, dental, pharmacy, optometry, chiropractic, or other, and those students desiring to dual major with a broad liberal education but with sufficient chemistry to continue in the chemical field. The BS programs allow for the training as prescribed by the American Chemical Society for a beginning chemical or biochemistry career in either industry, government, or preparation for graduate or professional school.
An environmental track in the chemistry program is also available for students and is accredited by the American Chemical Society.
The Chemistry Department has developed a 3+2 cooperative program with Chemical Engineering Departments at other colleges. The time of study for the program is 3 years at Oswego followed by 2 years at the cooperating engineering college. Upon successful completion of the program at both schools, students receive the Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from SUNY Oswego (BA or BS depending on program taken at Oswego) and the Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the cooperating college.
A 3+4 Pre-optometry program with the SUNY, College of Optometry is available where, after completion, students receive a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Oswego and a Doctorate in Optometry from SUNY, College of Optometry.
Geochemistry Major
The Department of Chemistry cosponsors a program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Geochemistry.
