THT 364 - Western Theatre: Edification or Entertainment? 2009-2010 Catalog Year
As an art form that explores the human condition, the western theatre has had to fulfill its dual role as “teacher” and “pleaser” since its Athenian creation in 534 B.C. To gain an understanding of the theatre’s dual nature, theatre production practices and conventions are placed in the larger context of the social, political, religious, philosophical, economic, and technological milieu of the societies and cultures that they reflect and occasionally transform.
