Our mission is to promote appreciation of the beauty and utility of mathematics, so the mathematics programs at Oswego introduce both mathematical theory and practical applications. The department offers the Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and the Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, as well as the Mathematics Minor and the Applied Statistics Minor. We work closely with the School of Education: Adolescence Education majors who concentrate in mathematics are strongly encouraged to also complete the BA in Mathematics, and Childhood Education majors may also choose our strong mathematics concentration program. In addition, we cooperate with the Economics Department and with the School of Business to offer interdisciplinary majors in Applied Mathematical Economics, and in Management Science. (These majors are described elsewhere in this Catalog.)
For purposes of placement and advisement, we offer placement exams. We want all of our students to enroll in courses that they are prepared to succeed in, and from which they will benefit.
Career opportunities in mathematics are numerous and varied. Recent graduates have been employed as research analysts, information system designers, systems analysts, computer programmers, underwriters, actuarial trainees, pension analysts, and insurance analyst trainees. Other graduates have gone on to graduate work in mathematics, statistics, education, physics, economics, and engineering.
