Program Description

The biomedical and health informatics program offers thorough graduate studies in concepts, methods, and skills for analyzing information practices, evaluating needs of providers and patients, and creating innovative technology solutions to address challenges the healthcare sector is currently facing. Our curriculum consists of 33-36 graduate credits of core, elective, and capstone experiences and provides three tracks, each specifically designed to focus on the needs of today’s healthcare settings in clinical informatics, health data science, and health information systems management. Program graduates undertake successful careers in clinical informatics, public health informatics, bioinformatics, or biotechnology in professional and/or research environments. This program can be completed in the classroom or entirely online. Upon entrance into the program, each participant will work closely with the program Director to develop an individualized study plan.

Biomedical and Health Informatics (33-36cr)

Foundations (0-3 cr)

BHI 552 - Biomedical and Health Terminology Credit: 3 *
* Students lacking prior knowledge in biomedical science will have to complete this 3 credit hour course.

Additional Program Requirements

Foundation Requirements: Students not coming from biology or health studies or equivalent are required to take a foundation course in Biomedical and Health Terminology. Prior knowledge of statistics and computer applications is required. The program Director will advise each student individually as to the best foundation knowledge to acquire to succeed in the program. The foundation requirements must be completed in order to continue in the program beyond the first year. Courses to satisfy the foundation requirements are regularly offered online. The program can be started in Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters.
Biomedical Human Subjects Research Training: Must be completed during coursework.
Certification Exams (Recommended not required): Students are encouraged to complete certification exams in biomedical informatics in support of their career goals.
