The Childhood Special Education Grades 1-6 (Professional Certification) program is in the Curriculum and Instruction Department, which is one of six departments in the School of Education. Visit the program admissions page to apply.

Program Description

This program focuses on developing your abilities to maximize learning for students with mild, moderate and severe disabilities through specialized planning and instruction matched to individual learner characteristics. You will develop valuable collaboration and co-teaching competencies to support students with disabilities in general education classrooms grades 1-6.

You will extend your specialized professional development through courses and field experiences for serving students who have autism and other complex developmental disabilities, and for assessment, data-based decision making, positive behavior interventions and assistive technology for a wide range of learners.

Note: This is a masters program for individuals who hold an initial certificate in Childhood Special Education.

Student Teaching: Twenty-one credit hours of Special Education course work must be completed with a B- or better prior to student teaching. Candidates will receive one placement that is cooperatively supervised by a college supervisor and the cooperating teacher. Candidates earn either a Satisfactory or an Unsatisfactory grade. Candidates who earn a grade of Unsatisfactory in SPE 591 Student Teaching will not be permitted to repeat the course a second time.
