The Art program is in the Department of Art and Design, which is one of five departments in the School of Communication, Media and the Arts. Visit the program admissions page to apply.
Program Description
The MA Studio Art program aims to develop the students’ skills and aesthetic understanding in an artistic discipline. Students are required to take courses that blend studio practice with references to art history and theory. Students have the chance to work closely with instructors who are committed to creative work in their own field and encourage students to follow the same path. The program encourages students to strive for the creation of a significant body of artwork representing very high levels of achievement.
This selective program emphasizing studio art includes several phases of professional competence in the department with the possible inclusion of other disciplines outside the department when necessary.
Curriculum (30 cr)
Students will be assigned an advisor by the program coordinator. It will be the responsibility of the advisor and student to develop a program of study. This program is intended to be individualized to meet the student’s specific needs and may include study in other departments of the College.
Additional Program Requirements
- Thesis Exhibition: An exhibition will be scheduled during the final month of the student’s study or at a time agreeable to both the student, the student’s advisor, and the program coordinator.
- Oral Defense: The program coordinator will schedule a time for an oral defense of the exhibition. The student’s advisor will serve as Chair of the Oral Defense Committee. At that time, the Oral Defense Committee, selected by the student and advisor, will respond to the student’s defense of his or her work. The result of the defense will be forwarded by the program coordinator to the Dean of Graduate Studies.
