Career and Technical Education for Practicing Teachers - Undergraduate Certificate Program

Career and Technical Education (18 cr)

This CTE certificate program is appropriate for teachers who are currently teaching in a school district or BOCES that has a partnership with SUNY Oswego. Candidates, who complete this program and pass the New York State Teacher Certification Exam, Educating All Students (EAS), can apply for Initial CTE Certification for grades 7-12.

This clinically rich CTE certificate program includes six required courses to offer candidates key knowledge, skills, and dispositions for teaching technical skills. Working with a school-based mentor teacher while undertaking program coursework, CTE candidates will learn about planning, teaching, and assessment strategies; adolescent development and learning processes; the nature of students with disabilities and/or special health care needs; pedagogical uses of technology; literacy development; and the relationship between schools and their communities.

In addition, this program positions candidates to apply for Professional CTE Certification. Upon completing the program, accumulating three years of full-time classroom teaching experience, and passing the New York State Teacher Certification Exam, Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST), candidates can apply to the New York State Education Department for Professional CTE Certification (Note: Candidates with less than a BS may also need to complete additional arts and science course work for Professional Certification).
