Program Overview
This program focuses on developing your abilities to maximize learning for students with mild, moderate, and severe disabilities through specialized planning and instruction matched to individual learner characteristics. You will develop valuable collaboration and co-teaching competencies to support students with disabilities in general education classrooms grades 1-6.
You will extend your specialized professional development through courses and field experiences for serving students who have autism and other complex developmental disabilities, and for assessment, data-based decision making, positive behavior interventions and assistive technology for a wide range of learners.
Following completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for New York State initial certification as a special education teacher in grades 1-6.
Prerequisites: Students must hold a valid NYS teaching certification in Childhood Education (grades 1-6) from an accredited IHE.
Degree Candidacy
It is the responsibility of the student to file for Degree Candidacy when 12-18 credit hours have been completed. Hours completed beyond 18 without candidacy may be subject to forfeiture. Candidates must have a grade of B- or better in every special education course and an overall cumulative average of 3.0 or better to qualify for degree candidacy. The Degree Candidacy application form can be found at http://apply.oswego.edu/sso.htm. Use your MyOswego credentials to login, click on Portal Home, then start New Application and select Graduate Candidacy from the drop down (click on Open Application to complete the application).
Student Teaching
Twenty-one credit hours of Special Education course work must be completed with a B- or better prior to student teaching. Candidates will receive one placement that is cooperatively supervised by a college supervisor and the cooperating teacher. Candidates earn either a Satisfactory or an Unsatisfactory grade. Candidates who earn a grade of Unsatisfactory in SPE 591 Student Teaching will not be permitted to repeat the course a second time.
