TESOL (ITI) Advanced Certificate Program


General Information

This Intensive Teaching Institute, TESOL program is appropriate for certified teachers who are currently teaching in a school district that has a partnership with SUNY Oswego. Candidates who complete this program, and pass the Content Specialty Test in ESOL, will be eligible to apply to the New York State Education Department for an Additional Certificate in ESOL K-12.

The Program

This TESOL clinically rich graduate program includes five required courses and three 60 clock-hour practicum experiences, to offer candidates key knowledge and skills, and to strengthen dispositions for teaching English language learners in their reqular and content area classrooms. Working with a school-based mentor teacher, while undertaking program coursework, TESOL candidates will learn about cultural and linguistic perspectives that inform teaching strategies to support English language learners.

Admission to any graduate program or certificate at SUNY Oswego is limited to those students who fulfill the requirements outlined by the Division of Graduate Studies, located on the Admissions catalog page.  In addition to the materials required by the Division of Graduate Studies, applicants must also submit all program specific materials required by the program.

Program specific requirements for ITI TESOL:

  • Applicant must hold a valid NYS Initial Teaching Certification (non-ESOL)
  • Currently teaching in a NYS school district that has an ITI partnership with SUNY Oswego (a copy of NYS Teacher Certificate must be submitted with application)
  • 12 semester hours of a language other than English (ASL is acceptable)
  • Methods of Literacy Instruction (3 credits)
  • At least two clock hours of training in detecting and reporting suspected child abuse
  • At least two clock hours of training in school violence prevention and intervention
