ECO 198 - FYSC: The Economics of Happiness


This course explores how factors beyond traditional economic indicators influence well-being and human potential. Students examine relationships between wealth, consumption, social connections, and life satisfaction while learning key terminology and measurement techniques in happiness economics. Through analyzing subjective well-being data, evaluating happiness indices, and engaging with diverse methodological approaches, students develop critical thinking skills by questioning standard economic measures and considering alternative frameworks. The course incorporates case studies from various cultures to enhance information literacy and features projects allowing students to develop evidence-based proposals for promoting both economic and emotional well-being in their communities. Students gain practical insights into how happiness metrics can reshape policy decisions at individual and societal levels.
