ANT 311 - Ethnographic Methods


A practical introduction to carrying out ethnographic research in the anthropological tradition. Students critically review the epistemologies, ethics, and politics of empirical ethnographic research while conducting field exercises that culminate in a professional portfolio of work samples. Readings draw from across the social sciences and professions, focusing on interpretive and applied anthropology. Emphasis throughout on qualitative literacy, or how to judge the rigor and soundness of qualitative empirical research.

Prerequisite: ANT 111 or 112; or instructor permission.
