CRW 320 - Nature Writing

This course explores creative writing that engages with the natural world. We’ll focus on reading and writing stories, creative nonfiction, and/or poems that respond to and shape our understanding of the environment. Some questions we’ll explore: How have representations of animals, plants, and landscapes evolved? How do poetry and creative prose engage with major environmental issues like climate change? How might creative works (re)connect us to the natural world? In addition to reading examples of the genre, students will learn to use their own exploration and observation of local environment(s) to craft compelling pieces of writing. Class time will include some lecture, but primarily will be discussion and activity-based, and coursework will include creative, reflective, and analytical writing.

Prerequisite: ENG 102 and minimum sophomore standing; or instructor permission.
