The Health Careers Education program is in the Career and Technical Educator Preparation Department (CTE), which is one of six departments in the School of Education. Visit the program admissions page to apply.
Program Description
The Master of Science in Education degree, major in Health Careers Education (7-12), is designed for specialists in the respective field that wish to gain initial certification to teach their subject area in New York State.
Please NOTE that this is not a Health teaching certification; it is Health Careers including:
- Practical Nursing
- Requires licensed Registered Nurse to teach
- Dental Assisting
- Requires licensed Dental Hygienist, Dental Assistant or Dentist
- Medical Lab Technology
- Requires licensed Medical Laboratory Technology Professional
- Ophthalmic Dispensing
- Requires NY Ophthalmic dispensing license
- Medical Assisting
- Dental Laboratory Technology
- Nursing Assistant
- Requires licensed Registered Nurse to teach
- Emergency Medical Services
- Requires NYS EMT or Paramedic to teach
- Physical Therapy Aid
- Requires NYS Physical Therapy license
- Pharmacy Assisting
- Requires NYS licensed Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technican
- Sterile Processing
- Requires certification from either CBSPD or IAHCMM
Note: All of these also require up to 4 years of documented work experience for NYS teaching certification

- Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SSHS) Training
- School of Education Professional Dispositions
- Comprehensive Exam: Prior to the completion of the MSEd degree, candidates will successfully complete the Graduate Comprehensive Exam. Please note that this exam is required of all degree candidates. The exam is administered online once each semester, usually on a Saturday. There is no cost for the exam. The exam consists of multiple choice and essay questions taken from the coursework that candidates have completed during their studies.
