General Information for Master of Business Administration Program

The basic program consists of 36 graduate credit hours of core, directed elective and elective study which builds upon a 21 credit hour foundation of accepted management skills, concepts, and principles. This program is intended to be equally applicable to private, public, and governmental sectors of management. This program can be completed in the classroom or entirely online. Upon entrance into the program each participant will work closely with the MBA Director to develop an individualized study plan.

Admission for Master of Business Administration Program

Application to the MBA Program should be done well in advance of the start of the semester. There is a rolling admissions. A program participant must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants to the program should have a minimum of a 2.6/4.0 undergraduate GPA and a score of 500 on the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) for admission, requirements for both are subject to increase in subsequent years. Each participant must submit two letters of reference in addition to the transcripts and examination reports required. The graduate director will review applications and provide recommendations to the Graduate Dean. Admission procedures are delineated in the ADMISSIONS  section of this Graduate Catalog.
Applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 560 (paper-based) or 220 (computer-based) or 83 (Internet based) is needed. Information on this test is available from Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08540.
All international students must have official transcripts sent directly from the student’s home school of study to SUNY Oswego. Transcripts cannot be used for official acceptance unless this criterion is met. Transcripts sent with the application can be used for review purposes only, even if they are sealed and have a stamp from the school.

Degree Candidacy for Master of Business Administration Program

It is the responsibility of the student to file for degree candidacy once they have completed 12 to 18 credit hours of graduate study. A cumulative average of 3.0 or better is required to qualify for the awarding of degree candidacy status. The graduate director will conduct a review of the candidate’s academic performance to ensure these standards are upheld. Any credit hours over 18 are subject to forfeiture.

Transfer Credit for Master of Business Administration Program

Up to six credit hours of accredited and approved graduate work may be transferred from other accredited graduate programs of study.

Foundation Requirements for Master of Business Administration Program

The foundation requirements must be completed in order to continue in the program beyond the first year. Credit may be given for these requirements based on prior academic credit, completion of programs with similar content, or experience. It is anticipated that most foundation requirements would have been previously satisfied by undergraduate course work for the typical business undergraduate student or a student in a business related field such as economics, computer science, etc. In addition, courses will be taught periodically which satisfy these requirements as a service to interested program participants. Credits earned below the 510 level are not a part of the 36 hours required for program completion. Participants may simultaneously complete their final foundation requirements and begin to take core courses as long as prerequisite requirements for core courses are met. Additional Information for Master of Business Administration Program

Students with weak writing or oral communication skills will be required to complete extra coursework in those areas. Students are encouraged to participate in internships through the Experience-Based Education Office. Credit for internships or CPA review coursework will appear on the student’s transcript, but may not be counted towards graduation in the student’s elective coursework.
