MUS 590 - African Music in the Americas

Catalog Year: 2016-2017

This course introduces students to the music of west Africa, and then studies how those musical characteristics were transplanted to Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, among others. The class also examines cultural, social and anthropological characteristics in West Africa, Brazil, Cuba, the Caribbean Islands and the United States.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing.
