The Department of Biological Sciences offers several newly revised degree programs in biology and zoology focusing on modern biology and science as process. From molecules to ecosystems, these programs provide solid foundations in a variety of subdisciplines that culminate in our Research and Evolution Capstone courses.

Through selection of appropriate courses in consultation with faculty advisors, students should be prepared to enter graduate programs, professional programs, and/or the workforce. Faculty expertise covers broad areas of molecular biosciences, plant and animal organismal studies, microbiology, development, genetics, conservation, and ecology, and our curricula, course offerings, and undergraduate research opportunities reflect that expertise. Our facilities for teaching and research include Rice Creek Field Station, The Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Center, and The Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Center.

The Department offers an Honors Program in the major for exceptional students, and oversees the Martin V. Torok Memorial Award, the Norman J. and Elsie H. Gillette Award in biology, the Zoology Senior Award, and the Halliday Summer Research Program.

A biology certification in education program for grades 7-12 and a science concentration in biology for grades 1-6 are offered. A 3+2 program in zoo technology is offered jointly by the Department of Biological Sciences and the Biological Parks Training Program and Teaching Zoo at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida, and a similar program offered with Niagara County Community College in Niagara, New York. The joint zoo technology program leads to the AS degree from the articulating college and a BS degree in Zoology from SUNY Oswego.
